Marcus Aurelius' gilded bronze equestrian statue rises out of the dark, above his line from the Meditations on the obstacle that helps us on the road, OBSTACLE in gold.
Marcus Aurelius (121–180) ruled Rome as emperor from 161 to 180. He also kept a notebook written for himself, the Meditations, now one of the most widely read texts of Stoicism. In Book V, section 20, he writes that what blocks the road ends up helping us forward. This is the passage behind the well-known line “the obstacle is the way”, but the poster prints the real sentence, from George Long's 1862 translation:
“That which is an obstacle on the road helps us on this road.”
At the centre stands the original equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in gilded bronze, made around AD 175: the only bronze equestrian statue of a Roman emperor to survive. It stood on the Capitoline square from 1538 to 1981 and is now inside the Capitoline Museums in Rome. Here it rises from a black background, caught in golden light. At the top, “Marcus Aurelius · Emperor of Rome · Stoic · 121 — 180”; below the statue, the quote in large cream capitals with OBSTACLE in gold, then “Meditations · Book V · 20”.
Hang it over the desk where you study, in your home gym or facing your bed: it is a line worth rereading on the days when nothing goes your way.
