The Arab Pop & Rap world

Arab pop and rap posters: Tunisian rappers, rock bands from Cairo and Amman, tarab icons. Hand-painted Arabic lettering, cassette-sleeve colours and street-poster grit.

There is the sound pouring out of a shared taxi in Tunis, the one at a Cairo wedding, the one at an open-air gig in Amman. Arabic music travels everywhere now, and it finally has its own images. Arab rap posters and portraits of tarab legends, printed in Tunisia, are a way of showing where you come from and what is on your headphones.

Cassette sleeves and Egyptian cinema

The look of this section draws on two memories. First, the cassette inlays sold from market stalls, with their posed photos, gold Arabic lettering and colours slightly faded by the sun. Then the hand-painted posters of Egyptian cinema: enormous faces, calligraphic titles, generous reds and ochres.

Add the codes of the street, graffiti, neon and raw type, and the result looks like the scene itself: somewhere between heritage and right now.

Tunisian rap, long kept on the margins, now plays everywhere: in the neighbourhoods, in cars heading to the beach in summer, in students' earphones. Its videos have built their own imagery, and it deserves a place on a wall.

From Tunis to Cairo, Amman to Morocco

  • Tunis: Balti, one of the founding figures of Tunisian hip-hop, A.L.A, Samara, and KTYB with his hazy cloud rap, each with a distinct visual world.
  • Cairo: the outspoken rock of Cairokee and the flow of Wegz, voices a whole generation sings along to.
  • Amman and beyond: JadaL, pioneers of Arabic rock in Jordan, Saint Levant moving between Arabic, English and French in a single song, and ElGrande Toto on the Moroccan side.
  • The legends: Umm Kulthum, Abdel Halim Hafez and Fairuz in Arab Legends, and Amr Diab, the evergreen king of pop.

Each page introduces the artist and their aesthetic, and fills up as new posters arrive.

How to hang it

In a bedroom, an artist portrait above the desk works like a life-size album cover. For a café, a recording studio or a living room, play with the generation gap: a tarab legend next to a rapper of today, two posters side by side with 3 cm between them.

The warm tones of the section, ochre, brick red and gold, sit beautifully with wood, copper, Berber rugs and the golden light of a Tunisian afternoon. Add a speaker, a few records or an old cassette on a shelf, and your wall tells the story of your playlist.

It also makes a thoughtful gift: few things say I know you like a poster of the artist on repeat in their headphones.

The scene is alive, and your wall can be too. We deliver to all 24 governorates, with cash on delivery.
