The 1849 daguerreotype of Poe, shown in its red velvet case, with his name in blackletter, "1809 — 1849" and two lines from "A Dream Within a Dream".
Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on 19 January 1809 and died in Baltimore on 7 October 1849. This portrait was taken in late May or early June 1849, a few months before his death. It is a daguerreotype, a photograph made on a metal plate, known as the "Annie" daguerreotype.
The poster shows the whole object on a black ground: the open red velvet case, the gilt mat, the oval brass frame, and Poe in the middle with his unruly hair, his moustache and a scarf knotted at his throat. Below, "Edgar Allan Poe" in large bone-white blackletter, "1809 — 1849" in red, then two lines from "A Dream Within a Dream", a poem from 1849:
All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream.
Across the top, "Boston 1809" and "Baltimore 1849", the two ends of his life.
It belongs above a writing desk, in a library or in a gothic bedroom. Put one of the Raven posters next to it and you have the poet and his poem on the same wall. The 4K-printed PVC board keeps the blacks deep.
Daguerreotype by an unknown maker, in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum (public domain).
