Gustave Doré's engraving of the raven perched on the bust of Pallas, in a double frame on an ivory ground, with the two lines of the poem that describe the scene.
In "The Raven", the bird steps in through the shutter, makes not the least obeisance, and settles on a bust of Pallas just above the chamber door. By the last stanza it is still sitting there.
This poster shows that moment as Gustave Doré drew it: the black raven upright on the goddess's helmet, the bust set above the door, and behind it a halo of pale faces opening like a fan. The plate sits inside a double black rule, like a page from an old book, on an ivory ground. At the top, "The Raven" in blackletter and, in red, "A Poem by Edgar Allan Poe · MDCCCXLV". Under the picture, the two lines that describe the scene:
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door— Perched, and sat, and nothing more.
The ivory ground makes it softer than most gothic posters. It suits a reading corner, a study, a hallway or a library wall, and sits well with wood and warm beige tones. The PVC board hangs as it is, no frame needed.
Engraving by Gustave Doré (1832–1883), from the 1883 edition digitised by the Bibliothèque nationale de France (public domain).
