Wish You Were Here as a vintage postcard: the cover photo with the handshake sticker, the 5 tracks handwritten in blue ink and a postmark dated 12 September 1975.
Wish You Were Here came out on 12 September 1975, on Harvest in the UK and Columbia in the US, and went to No. 1 in both. It was recorded at EMI Studios (Abbey Road) in London from 13 January to 28 July 1975. Its “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” is a nine-part tribute to Syd Barrett.
“Wish you were here” is what people write on the back of a postcard, so the poster becomes one, on a warm cream background. At the top, the cover photo, slightly tilted in its white border: two stuntmen shaking hands at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California, one of them on fire. On its corner sits George Hardie's mechanical handshake sticker, as on the black shrink-wrap of the 1975 LP. Below, the title in italics, the 5 tracks handwritten in blue ink, a stamp made from the Mono Lake diver photo, a decorative “London · Released · 12 Sep 1975” postmark and a P.S.: on take 15 the wind changed and Ronnie Rondell's moustache got singed.
Light and warm, it suits a bedroom, an entrance or a living room in soft tones. 4K-printed on a PVC board about 1 cm thick, it hangs without a frame.
Cover photo by Aubrey Powell (Hipgnosis); sticker by George Hardie.
