Dark academia and gothic decor: libraries, candles and ravens in a sunlit room

Engravings, old books, ravens and cathedrals: how to pull off dark academia and gothic decor without turning your room into a cellar, even in bright Tunisian light.

· 3 min read

A cup of tea going cold beside an open book. A candle, a cathedral engraving, a raven that seems to be watching you from the wall. Dark academia decor and its older sibling, the gothic style, promise the mood of a study at dusk, half mystery, half melancholy. The challenge, if you live in Tunisia, is making that atmosphere work in a room flooded with sunshine and usually painted white.

The good news: it can be done, and it can look even better for it. Here is how.

Where dark academia comes from

The dark academia aesthetic took shape on Tumblr in the mid-2010s before spreading to Instagram and TikTok. Its founding text is Donna Tartt's The Secret History, published in 1992: a group of classics students, an isolated college, a murder. Fans began sharing moodboards inspired by the novel and a style was born: tweed, wood-panelled libraries, classical busts, fountain-pen handwriting, late-afternoon light.

Gothic is far older. It borrows pointed arches and rose windows from medieval cathedrals, and vampires and ravens from nineteenth-century fiction. Bram Stoker's Dracula appeared in 1897; Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven was first printed on 29 January 1845, with its famous refrain, "Nevermore". Dark academia is, in a way, gothic that went to the library.

The symbols worth hanging

  • Books and libraries: shelves in perspective, yellowed pages, reading lamps. The heart of our Dark Academia world.
  • The raven and the skull: a nod to memento mori, "remember that you will die", a classic still-life motif. See Ravens & Skulls.
  • Poe: his portrait, his pen, his black bird. The Edgar Allan Poe collection is essential.
  • Cathedrals: spires, flying buttresses, stained glass. Vertical lines that make a ceiling feel higher. Browse Gothic Cathedrals.
  • Tarot: the Rider-Waite deck, published in 1909 and illustrated by Pamela Colman Smith, set the imagery everyone knows. Its 78 ink-drawn cards are small engravings in their own right.
  • Wednesday: the 2022 Netflix series, with Tim Burton directing the first half of the season, made black and plaits fashionable again. Her school is called Nevermore, a wink at Poe.

Going dark in a bright room

The trap is painting everything black. Under Mediterranean light, a fully dark room quickly feels airless. Contrast works better.

  • Keep the walls light and let the posters carry the darkness. A black engraving on an off-white wall looks like a page from an old book.
  • Pick a palette: ink black, burgundy, forest green, sepia and a touch of gold. Three of these are plenty.
  • Filter the light rather than blocking it: a linen or cream sheer softens midday sun into that golden, late-afternoon glow.
  • Add wood and texture: a dark wooden shelf, stacked books, a velvet throw. Dark academia is a tactile style.
  • Think evening light: a desk lamp with a shade, warm fairy lights or LED candles. The mood truly comes alive after dark.

Building your wall

For a student desk, the most effective set-up is a trio: a library, a raven, a cathedral. Three posters aligned along their top edges and evenly spaced above the desk. Revision has never looked so good.

In a bedroom, go for one strong piece above the bed, a cathedral seen from below for instance, and a quieter poster near the bedside lamp. The eye travels upwards and the room feels taller.

Running a café or a small bookshop? Dark academia was practically made for it. Hang a row of engravings along the wall where people sit to read, keep the lighting low and warm, and let a single raven or a portrait of Poe watch over the counter. It turns a corner into a place people want to linger, cup in hand, long after the coffee has gone cold.

If you love writing, pair a quote poster with a gothic engraving: dark academia is also a love of words. Our guide to quote posters will help you choose yours.
