Panel I of the Mercedes-Benz 1886 · 1954 · 2022 triptych: Carl Benz's Patent-Motorwagen under a cone of light, in black and gold. It works just as well on its own.
On 29 January 1886, Carl Benz filed a patent application for his motor car. The patent was granted on 2 November that year, and the Benz Patent-Motorwagen is now widely regarded as the first practical automobile. Three wheels, a 954 cc single cylinder, and everything that came after. Forty years later, in 1926, Benz & Cie and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft came together, and the Mercedes-Benz brand was born.
On the poster, the Motorwagen stands on a mirror-black floor under a cone of light, with its varnished wooden body, buttoned bench seat and tall spoked wheels. Behind it, 1886 is engraved in gold. Top left, the Roman numeral I; at the bottom, its name and two lines: "single cylinder · 954 cm³ · three wheels" and the date the patent was filed. The car in the photo is a replica, not the original, and the credit says so.
The black and warm wood suit a living room with older furniture, a bookshelf wall or a study. It is 4K-printed on a PVC board about 1 cm thick and goes up without a frame.
This is panel I of the Mercedes-Benz 1886 · 1954 · 2022 triptych, alongside the 300 SL and the AMG ONE, but it holds its own.
