About this poster

Panel II of the Mercedes-Benz 1886 · 1954 · 2022 triptych: the silver 300 SL with its gullwing doors open, under a spotlight. It works just as well on its own.

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, model code W198, is the car you recognise by its doors, which open upwards like wings: hence the name Gullwing. Built from 1954 to 1957, with 1,400 coupés made, it carries a 2996 cc M198 straight-six with mechanical direct fuel injection. Up to 260 km/h: it was the fastest production car of its time.

Doors up under the spotlight

On the poster, the silver 300 SL is seen from the rear three-quarter, both gullwing doors raised, on a mirror-black floor that throws back its reflection. Behind it, 1954 is engraved in gold; above, "MERCEDES-BENZ" in widely spaced letters and the Roman numeral II. At the bottom, its name and two lines of specs: "straight-six · 2996 cm³ · direct fuel injection" and "1,400 coupés · up to 260 km/h". The car in the photo is a 1955 example on display at the Toyota Automobile Museum.

Silver on black suits a modern living room, a dark desk or a tidy garage. It is 4K-printed on a PVC board about 1 cm thick and goes up without a frame.

This is the middle panel of the Mercedes-Benz 1886 · 1954 · 2022 triptych, between the Patent-Motorwagen and the AMG ONE, but it stands perfectly well alone.
