About this poster

Tunisia's 1978 team in a period colour photo, a giant red 3–1, the scorers, the date and the Rosario stadium, on a cream background edged with red, orange and black stripes.

On 2 June 1978, at the Estadio Gigante de Arroyito in Rosario, Argentina, Tunisia faced Mexico in Group 2 of the World Cup. Mexico scored first from a penalty in the 45th minute, through Vázquez Ayala. Tunisia answered with Kaabi (55′), went ahead with Ghommidh (79′) and sealed it with Dhouib (87′). Tunisia 3, Mexico 1: the first win by an African and Arab team at a World Cup.

At the top of the poster, a colour photo of the 1978 Tunisia team in red shirts and white shorts, six players standing and five crouching in front of a full stand. Below, TUNISIE and MEXIQUE, a huge red 3–1 with a black shadow, the scorers, the date and the stadium. At the very bottom comes “Le onze de Rosario”: Naili, Dhouib, Kaabi, M. Labidi, Jebali, Ghommidh, Lahzami, Ben Rehaiem, Dhiab, Akid and Ben Aziza, with coach Abdelmajid Chetali. Red, orange and black stripes close the top and bottom, like a 1970s match programme. The poster text is in French.

A piece of 1978 on the wall

The cream background and warm colours sit well on a white or beige wall: a living room where you watch the games, a bedroom, a café. The PVC board, about 1 cm thick and 4K-printed, hangs without a frame.

The photo is an archive picture of the Tunisia team in 1978, author unknown, in the public domain.
