About this poster

The Master of Puppets cover, large on black, with the title, all 8 tracks and their times, five colours from the cover, the line-up and a line for Cliff Burton.

Master of Puppets is Metallica's third studio album, released on 3 March 1986 on Elektra. It was recorded from 1 September to 27 December 1985 at Sweet Silence Studios in Copenhagen and produced by the band with Flemming Rasmussen. It is the last album with bassist Cliff Burton, who died on 27 September 1986.

At the top, the real cover across the full width: the field of white crosses under a red sky, with puppet strings held by two hands. Below it, the title in big letters, “Released 03.03.1986 · 8 tracks · 54:52”, five colour swatches sampled from the cover, then side one and side two with every track's running time, from “Battery” to “Damage, Inc.”. A bar draws the whole album in one line, each track as long as its duration. At the bottom, the line-up — James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Cliff Burton, Kirk Hammett — the credits, and a red line for Cliff Burton (1962 – 1986).

Black, bone and blood red

The warm black background makes the red and orange sky glow. It holds its own above a turntable, an amp or a desk, and works in a row with the band's discography. 4K-printed on a PVC board about 1 cm thick, it hangs without a frame.

Cover illustration by Don Brautigam, from a concept by Metallica and Peter Mensch.
