About this poster

A red-orange 60s record sleeve with his sepia portrait, the black LP sliding out against a deep teal wall, and eight of his song titles in Arabic.

Abdel Halim Hafez was born on 21 June 1929 in El-Halawat, in Egypt's Sharqia Governorate, and died in London on 30 March 1977. His nickname: العندليب الأسمر, the Brown-Skinned Nightingale.

The poster imagines a 1960s record sleeve leaning against a deep teal wall. The sleeve is red-orange: his name in big cream letters, the nickname in mustard Ruq'a calligraphy and his smiling portrait in sepia inside a cream frame. The black LP slides out of the sleeve, with a mustard label: “33 RPM”, his name and “1929 — 1977”. The sleeve was made up for the poster; it is not a real album.

Under the record, eight of his song titles run over two lines: أهواك · سوّاح · زي الهوا · جانا الهوى, then موعود · على قد الشوق · فاتت جنبنا · قارئة الفنجان, his last song. At the very bottom, “The Brown Nightingale · Le Rossignol brun”.

A record on the wall

Red-orange and deep teal play off each other: the poster warms up a living room, a bedroom or a music corner next to a turntable. It suits dark wood and vintage furniture.
