Umm Kulthum in a red and black halftone: her dark glasses in front of the Giza Sphinx, her name in big red calligraphy and كوكب الشرق in black.
They called her Kawkab al-Sharq, the Star of the East. Born Fatima Ibrahim el-Sayyed el-Beltagi, Umm Kulthum died in Cairo on 3 February 1975. Her heavy dark glasses became her trademark after she was treated for Graves' disease in 1953.
The poster works like a two-ink screen print: red and black on cream. At the top, أم كلثوم in huge red Ruq'a calligraphy, then كوكب الشرق in black and “Star of the East · L'astre de l'Orient” in small capitals. Below, the photo turns into a halftone: Umm Kulthum, face lifted, dark glasses and an earring, in front of the head of the Sphinx at Giza, which bleeds off the bottom edge. The dots sit slightly off-register and registration marks frame the corners, like a real studio print.
With only three tones, the poster stands out on a white wall as much as on a dark one. Hang it above a record player, in a hallway or in a living room where the old songs still play.
