Tarab legends posters: Oum Kalthoum in her dark glasses, Fairuz, Abdel Halim. Pop-art portraits and vintage concert bills in mustard yellow, red and green.
In countless Tunisian cafés, Umm Kulthum's voice still drifts over the afternoon tea, as if time had paused on one long, held note. She, Fairuz and Abdel Halim Hafez sit at the heart of the golden age of Arabic song, the world of tarab: the musical rapture that grips a listener and refuses to let go. An Umm Kulthum poster, or any print of these legends, puts that shiver on your wall.
Umm Kulthum was known as "the Star of the East". "Enta Omri", composed by Mohammed Abdel Wahab and first performed in 1964, remains one of the most famous songs in all of Arabic music. Fairuz, the voice of Lebanon, built with the Rahbani brothers a repertoire that people still play every morning over coffee. Abdel Halim Hafez (1929–1977), "the Dark Nightingale", made whole generations of romantics cry.
Visually, the era speaks for itself: deep black and white, warm sepia, gold highlights, red velvet stage curtains, chrome microphones and dark sunglasses. A kind of elegance that hasn't aged a day.
These prints shine in a living room, a hallway, a reading corner or a café with an old-world feel. Hung as a series, three portraits a few centimetres apart create a real wall of memory, understated and warm.
To link the eras, pair them with Amr Diab, heir to the great Egyptian song tradition, or with JadaL, whose first single was a rock cover of Abdel Halim. The rest of the scene is in our Arab pop and rap collection.
