About this poster
The 1978 BMW M1, white with a light blue, violet and red nose, set on the same three stripes sweeping across the sheet, under a huge italic M1 and its spec grid.
The M1 is the first mid-engined BMW built in series. Model code E26, produced from 1978 to 1981 with only 453 made, it was designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign. In the middle of the car, a 3.5-litre M88 straight-six (3453 cc) drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual gearbox, for 1300 kg in all. Final assembly took place in Munich.
On the poster, the white M1, its nose painted light blue, violet and red, is cut out and set on those same three stripes, which cross the off-white background on a diagonal. Above it sits a giant italic M1, with "BMW Motorsport · München · 1978" along the top. At the bottom, a six-box grid: model code, production years, units built, engine, layout and design.
Room for the stripes
The pale background leaves the colours all the space they need: it works on a white or light grey wall, in a bedroom, an office or a living room, and above a workbench it gives a garage the feel of a race shop. It is 4K-printed on a PVC board about 1 cm thick and goes up without a frame.
