Michael Jackson

A tilted fedora, a single sequinned glove, white socks flashing under trousers cut just too short. One silhouette is enough to recognise him, and that's the power of a Michael Jackson poster: even as a shadow, everybody knows who's dancing.

Pictures of the King of Pop

The founding moment came in 1983. On the Motown 25 TV special, at the end of Billie Jean, Michael slid backwards as if walking on the Moon. The moonwalk lasted a few seconds and went round the world. Then came Thriller, Bad and a 1990s in which he ruled unchallenged.

In 1991 Dangerous arrived with one of the busiest covers in pop history: a painting by Mark Ryden showing only Michael's eyes behind a golden mask, surrounded by strange animals and curious objects in a baroque circus setting. You can stare at it for an hour and still find new details. The same year brought the Black or White video, and in 1993 he headlined the Super Bowl halftime show on his own.

The MJ look works in three registers: the black and white of the dance moves, the gold and red of the showman, and the near-surreal abundance of Dangerous.

Bringing him home

A silhouette mid-moonwalk, black on a light background, suits a minimal bedroom or a dance studio, adding movement to the wall. Golden, Dangerous-inspired visuals prefer darker walls and warm light.

For a fully nineties wall, put the King of Pop next to the decade's other icons: the rhymes of 90s hip-hop or the colours of Friends. The whole decade lives in our 90s collection.

Each poster is printed in Tunisia, delivered to all 24 governorates and paid for on arrival. Now try that moonwalk on the tiles.
