About Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul posters: white-haired Kaneki, the stitched-teeth mask and a single red kakugan eye, with the 東京喰種 calligraphy in blood red.
A black leather mask, a zip across teeth that show far too much, one eye uncovered, red on black. A Tokyo Ghoul poster never leaves anyone indifferent. Sui Ishida published Tokyo Ghoul in Weekly Young Jump from 2011 to 2014, followed by the sequel Tokyo Ghoul:re until 2018. Studio Pierrot adapted it for TV from 2014, opening with "Unravel", the song by TK of Ling tosite sigure.
The Tokyo Ghoul look: beauty and unease
The story follows Ken Kaneki, a shy student who becomes half human, half ghoul after a botched operation. He finds refuge at Anteiku, a small café run by ghouls, and discovers a hidden world living in the middle of Tokyo.
Visually, everything rests on unsettling contrasts. The kakugan, a red iris on an eye turned black. The kagune, predatory limbs that unfurl like scarlet tentacles. The masks, each one unique, hiding a ghoul's identity. And Kaneki himself, whose look changes as the story unfolds.
Ishida also has a very personal illustration style, with colours that feel like watercolour, stains and almost painterly textures. His covers look more like gallery pieces than manga artwork.
A Tokyo Ghoul wall in your room
Kaneki's mask is a powerful motif on its own: on a light wall, it becomes an instant focal point. For a softer mood, choose a watercolour-style piece in washed-out reds, greys and whites, which blends easily into a minimal room.
Pair Tokyo Ghoul with other dark series such as Death Note, or with neon Tokyo scenes as a reminder that it all happens on the streets of Japan's capital. Warm, low lighting makes the reds glow.
For fans in Tunisia who had "Unravel" stuck on repeat, this wall already has its soundtrack.
Half human, half ghoul, all you.
