Attack on Titan

A colossal, skinless face rising over a fifty-metre wall. Few anime openings have hit as hard as that one. An Attack on Titan poster captures that vertigo: tiny humans facing giants, and the urge to see what lies on the other side. Hajime Isayama published Shingeki no Kyojin in Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine from 2009 to 2021; Wit Studio adapted it first, and MAPPA took over for the final season.

Walls, wings and green cloaks: the Titan aesthetic

The whole world is built on contrasts of scale. Three walls, Maria, Rose and Sina, shelter a crowded humanity in towns of stone and red rooftops. Above them, sky; beyond them, the unknown.

The strongest symbol is the Wings of Freedom, the emblem of the Survey Corps: two overlapping wings, one blue, one white, stitched onto the back of green cloaks. Add the omni-directional mobility gear, the cables and blades that let soldiers fly between rooftops, and you get images full of motion, characters hanging in mid-air.

The colours are more muted than most shōnen: olive green, leather brown, stone grey, pale sky, and now and then the red steam of a Titan. A grown-up, almost cinematic palette.

Making an Attack on Titan wall

The Wings of Freedom work like a coat of arms: alone on a light wall, they say whose side you are on. For something more dramatic, pick a vertical scene where a soldier launches toward a Titan; the tall format exaggerates the scale.

In a bedroom, pair those earthy tones with wood, leather or black metal. On a living-room wall, a row of portraits, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, Levi, tells the whole squad's story. Fans of dark storytelling will also find a lot to love in Berserk.

From high-school corridors in Tunis to cafés in Sousse, the series sparked heated debates all over Tunisia. More sagas are waiting in the anime category.

Beyond the walls lies freedom.
